Middle School

Our new Middle School program is blossoming beautifully. We have a rigorous, standards-aligned Math program including fantasy basketball statistics studies, and a lively hands-on Science curriculum including building jar terrariums and extracting strawberry DNA. We have a fun, practical life Spanish program— one student took her Spanish folder with her on a trip to Mexico so she could practice the useful vocabulary she’d learned. In Humanities, we have an integrated Social Studies, Literature and Writing program. Students have studied themes of Power and Belonging in World History, studied Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, read literature books such as Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor and Front Desk by Kelly Yang, practiced writing skills, and enjoyed Shakespearean insults and Reader’s Theater. Treven Hooker is leading our Nature Studies Program with hiking field trips, weekly ecology lessons, and a Fall and Spring Camping Trip. We had a blast last year at BICAS doing recycled metal art and learning about bike care, riding, and repair. Last Spring we saw Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at The Rogue Theater. Our small, mixed-age classroom community is creative, kind, and close-knit— it’s a truly unique Middle School experience.
